Griggs Leads Baseball in Split With Lock Haven

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

BLOOMSBURG- Michael Griggs (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) pitched a seven-hit shutout as the Bloomsburg University baseball team defeated Lock Haven 1-0 in the second half of an afternoon double-header on Saturday. In the opening game, the Huskies lost 10-9 in eight innings.

Griggs had three strikeouts and did not walk a batter in his first complete game of the season. Bloomsburg scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first inning, when Tyler Ganser's (Lancaster/Lampeter-Strasburg) RBI single scored Preston Hitchcock (Laceyville/Lock Haven). Griggs was superb the rest of the way, buoyed by a staunch fielding effort from the Huskies outfield.

In game one, the Huskies carried a 1-0 lead through the first four innings before Lock Haven exploded for nine runs in the top of the fifth to take a nine 9-2 lead . The Huskies would respond in the bottom of the fifth when Kevin Ward (Upper Darby/Monsignor Bonner) knocked in Anthony Forman (Richboro/Council Rock South) on a fielder's choice, followed by Chris Tressler (Lewistown/Lewistown) scoring off of a wild pitch to cut the Lock Haven lead to 9-4 after five innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Huskies would rally. Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) and Carlos Medina (Lititz/Manheim Twp) both had RBI singles to cut the lead to 9-6. Lock Haven's Erik Christensen then surrendered a bases loaded walk to cut the lead to two, 9-7. Rich Letts (Parkesburg/Octorara) followed with a two run single that tied the game up at nine all in the bottom of the 7th. The Huskies loaded the bases once again, but Hitchcock flied out to left, sending the game into extra innings.

An RBI single in the top of the eighth put Lock Haven up 10-9, and that's all they would need. The Huskies had two runners on in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, but Donofry was caught stealing second, ending the Bloomsburg rally.

Bloomsburg improves their record to 5-15 on the season. The Huskies return to action on Monday, when they host Shippensburg. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
